I drink at least one can of diet coke a day and have always assumed that as it’s zero calories, it can’t be doing me any harm. But a friend told me the other day that additives in diet drinks can actually make you put weight on your tummy and can trick you into eating more! Is this true?
Your friend is absolutely right. Consuming diet drinks not only causes you to over eat, gain weight and upset your stomach, it can cause more serious health conditions ranging from constant headaches, dizziness. depression, anxiety, memory loss, sleep problems, obesity, diabetes and heart conditions. Diet drinks contain an artificial sweetener called aspartame also sometimes called "Equal" or "NutraSweet". This is one of the main ingredients in diet drinks and can have a negative affect on the body. When aspartame is digested in our body it is broken down into a number of different chemicals which are effectively poison to our bodies and result in a number of side effects, some of which can be very serious. While 'low or no calorie' drinks sound like they should help you loose weight, they actually have the opposite affect. Diet drinks trick your body into craving sweet things or more carbohydrate because you are not getting the nourishment that you need – and that it thinks it’s getting. Your body has a clever way of looking after itself and if it is not recognising the food or drink you are putting into your body as nourishing then it will continue to send messages to your brain telling you to eat more until it is satisfied and properly nourished. Once the caffeine and sugar buzz has worn off you sugar levels will dip to such a low that you’ll start to crave more sugar and so the hunt for chocolate begins. You get stuck in a vicious circle of dependency on stimulants which in the long-term can lead to obesity as all excess sugar is stored as fat in your body. Although diet coke contains no real sugar or fat the insulin imbalances it causes in the body can lead to weight gain and even obesity. You are better off having the real Coke with normal sugar, which while far from ideal, is better than filling yourself up with chemicals that cause long term health effects.
