I’m always been told that nuts and seeds are a great snack, but they’re so high in calories that they scare me! How much can I include in my diet without piling on the pounds? And are some nuts and seeds better than others?
Nuts and seeds are a perfect snack, but you’re right, they are high in fat and calorie dense and because they’re so tasty it can be difficult not to overeat them! But they are definitely an important part of a healthy diet. Researchers have found that people who eat nuts regularly have lower risks of heart disease. Nuts and seeds can help you feel fuller for longer and could make you eat less as they provide a greater sense of satiety when either eaten as part of a meal or as a snack. They are full of goodness; nuts provide protein and many essential vitamins, such as A and E, minerals and fibre. They make a better snack than a chocolate bar or bag of crisps and provide a bit of additional nutritional oomph when sprinkled on your cereal or salad. The good fats in nuts and seeds help stabilize blood sugar levels so you’re less likely to crave sugar foods. So, they might contain a high level of fat, but it’s good fat that’s absolutely essential to your body.
