The Celebrity Followers: Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna The Idea Devised in Japan in as far back as the 1920s, macrobiotic diets were designed to promote balance inside the body using the idea of yin and yang. Balance within the body (i.e. choosing foods in relation to our physical needs and therefore attaining good health) is created in four main ways, according to the macrobiotic diet: by eating food grown in the region that you live in, eating foods grown in the same climate that you live in, eating in accordance with the seasons and the yin and yang principle. This states that foods have expansive energy – the yin – and contractive energy, the yang, and that the foods we eat need to balance this out for our internal energy requirements.
