Despite being pushed out of the spotlight by newer, more user-friendly, low-carb plans, the Scarsdale is still a fad diet fave, proving that like high-waisted flared jeans, quick-fix weight loss plans never really go out of fashion. Celebrity Followers: Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, Meg Matthews The Idea: The diet was created by obesity specialist Dr. Herman Tarnower in the 1970s and as a ‘high-protein, low-carb’ plan it was the Atkins of the time. The diet is designed to be followed for 14 days and is based around five, rigid daily meal plans which you rotate during the fortnight. The Scarsdale Diet eliminates most carbohydrates and even the amounts of those that you’re allowed, such as ‘good’ wholegrain carbs, are very limited. Snacking is banned, sugar is replaced by artificial sweeteners and the only drinks you’re allowed are water, tea, coffee and sugar-free fizzy drinks. The book also includes a stay slim for life plan to help you keep those pounds off once you finish the demanding diet.
