Not only is vitamin C a nifty little nutrient for keeping colds at bay, this little fighter can help the body churn up fat. A study by Arizona State University compared how much fat people with low vitamin C levels and those with normal levels burnt during an hour on the treadmill. Those who had obviously been sucking on their half-time oranges burnt a really rather impressive 25% more fat than those who’s vitamin C tank was running low. So how’s it work? Well, vitamin C is vital to create the compound carnitine which plays a part in turning fat into fuel. As the body can’t store vitamin C you need to top up your levels everyday. And it’s not just oranges that contain the stuff; spinach, kiwi fruit, strawberries, cauliflower amongst many others are loaded with vitamin C.
